Waiter, there's a fly in my soup!

Disclaimer: This is NOT a dream/nightmare. Please read on...

Picture waking up on a crisp Autumn morning, a pot of tea brewing, your favourite spread is out, toaster is ready and as you prepare to toast your eagerly-awaited slice of bread you find an unwelcomed surprise...a cockroach! This was what a Sydney-sider experienced earlier this week.

I am reminded of a popular waiter's joke:

'Waiter, there's a fly in my soup!!'
"No Sir, that's a cockroach, the fly is on your steak!"

My worst dining-out experience (thankfully, I suppose!) has been finding a hair (which I imagine fell of the back of the chef's hand, or even eyelash) on my plate. Now that I think of the eyelack, I also imagine the millions of bacteria which exist at the base of our eyelashes. Mmmm, maybe I shouldn't be so thankful after all...

What inedible thing have you found on your plate in the past?

Ha,ha! The meal I cooked on Saturday night. I was trying out some of those vegetarian "products", and it was way too salty and yes, inedible unfortunately. :(

Not lately. I grow most of my vegetables, and they get plenty of rain and sorting and washing before they make it to the table. But, at a fancy restaurant, I had a salad with extra protein I had not ordered.

Lisa: Long hair has got to be one of the worst and probably occurs frequently...ykhhh!

Natalie: I tend to be a bit heavy handed with the salt, much to 16 year old's chagrin!

Lakeviewer: Doesn't it annoy you that you can go to a fancy, reputable restaurant, pay good money and still get something you hadn't bargained for?

I found a small rock on a frozen pizza several years ago. Luckily I didn't bite into it, but spotted it just before. I saved the rock as a souvenir.

A screw. A little metal screw was in my salad. I was so lucky I didn't bite into it.

see you there! said...

Nothing lately, unless you count all those unpronounceable additives or the pesticides we can't see. We try to cook from scratch and eat local but it doesn't always happen.

Suko: A rock...how bizzare! I guess we should all look a little closely at what we eat...just incase!

La Belette Rouge: Very lucky indeed! You actually just reminded me of my first international flight on Malaysian airways. I actually bit down on a chunk of metal (about the size of a pea). Luckily no damage was done. I was offered a first class seat, but I was so annoyed I refused and wrote a letter to MA when I returned home. Didn't get a response though. Should've taken that 1st class seat!

Darla: I guess home cooking is the safest way to get a 'clean' preservative-free meal. I cook most days (which I enjoy, most days!), for the very reasons regarding cleanliness and health, however I do allow the family to eat out about once a fortnight, and I get a nice break!

Some years ago I went our for lunch with a friend at a place called "The Slug & The Lettuce" and I found a huge living slug in my lettuce!!! I took it as a joke as asked the waiter if that the restaurant's policy to add a free slug to the meal. But I was pregnant of my daughter at the time and I was a bit afraid of catching toxoplasmosis...Yuk!!!

A baby roach!!! Arrghhh! And you bring back such wonderful (read, painful) memories.

Yes, it was at a Malaysian restaurant many years ago, and I have since tried to avoid it even though it was one of my favorites. I still love the cuisine though...roti canai mmmm yum!

I found a screw and what looked like a finger nail in my take-out chinese food - never ordered from there again.

Cockroach on the bread, yak! Me I experience fly in my soup, yak. But ants in my food I eat.

Mervat said...

Antonella: That is just plain disgusting. How could the waiter joke like that? I could never dine at a place that had the name of a bug in its title!

SSQuo: I am so sorry for the momories! Hope you haven't experienced anything like that since.

Kim: Oh how un-appetising!
I think the finger nail is worse than the screw.

Bradpetehoops: Thank you for visiting. Indeed yuk to the roach! What do the ants taste like...chicken?!

Hair. Yes, definitely had hair in my soup. Bugs and such in my lettuce, and numerous flies in my beer.

Not all unexpected menu items are unpleasant. My husband found a pearl once, in a muscle (of the shelled variety). He had it mounted on a antique silver broach, and gave it to me for my birthday. Ahhhhhh.
